The shop window for innovations and other centres of excellence in the region can be explored as excursions.
24.08.2017 // HUSUM – What others can only show with models, at HUSUM Wind you can see live and in colour: Innovations in action. This is made possible by Windtestfeld-Nord, which is being inaugurated on 7 September, only a few minutes drive from the exhibition grounds. Visitors and exhibitors can marvel at six new types of wind turbines going through their trials. Five prototypes have already been erected, and the last turbine, a Senvion, will be completed shortly before the start of the fair. Messe Husum & Congress GmbH is one of the shareholders in the non-profit Windtestfeld-Nord GmbH.
The wind test field is sited in the parish of Südermarsch – where conditions are virtually perfect. Thanks to the steady strong winds here, the 1,000 full load hours required for the certification of a new wind turbine will already be clocked up in about four months. Elsewhere it can take up to nine months. And a place on the wind test field means there is none of the usual laborious search for a trial site. With HUSUM Wind as its neighbour, this again underscores the importance of the region as the centre of expertise and innovation for the German wind industry.
“The wind test field is the ideal enhancement to our exhibition programme, because it shows what makes Husum such a special location for a trade fair: you will not find this unique combination of theory and practice anywhere but here, where we not only work with wind energy, but where we experience it first-hand”, says Peter Becker, managing director of Messe Husum & Congress. “There are only a few wind test fields in Germany as it is – and our special conditions make us unique. What is also special about us is the value creation for the region”, emphasises Holger Arntzen, managing director of Windtestfeld-Nord GmbH. Factors such as a business location in Schleswig-Holstein, the number of employees, the business tax income and the degree of innovation all play a role in selecting the turbine operators.
On the basis of these criteria, six sites on the test field were finally awarded to SkyWind, Siemens, Senvion, Nordex, Enercon and GE in an tendering process. The sites have been leased for a period of 10 years, after which there will be a new tendering procedure. Turbines with a construction height of up to 200 metres are permitted on the 150-hectare site. There was great acceptance on the part of the local residents from the very beginning – not least because the test field strengthens the local economy. A substation was commissioned at the end of February 2017, so that the power generated can be fed straight into the 110-kilovolt high voltage power lines that run through the site, and which distribute the power throughout Germany. Around 35 million euros have been invested in the development to date, and many regional enterprises were involved.
During the wind trade fair the wind turbines will become a work of art: in a unique and atmospheric light installation by the artist Gisela Meyer-Hahn the turbines will be bathed in colours that change to create finely balanced compositions. The special play of colours can be marvelled at from 11 to 15 September, daily between 18:00 and midnight.
